when the Air Force in 1997 released Roswell Report: Case Closed, its debunking of the famed crash incident of 1947, it relied heavily on information provided by Lt. Col. Raymond Madson, project officer in charge of the military’s “crash test dummy” program known as “Project High Dive.” Madson’s program was cited as the definitive explanation for widely reported claims of small alien bodies said to be recovered after the crash.

The representation was that witnesses had confused the dummies with creatures from another world. But now, Madson has come forward publicly to say that the Air Force study is “itself a lie.” Moreover, he believes aliens really did crash to Earth in the incident, and that the author of the Air Force report had no interest in uncovering what really happened, but “was on a mission.”

In an interview with on-line reporter Anthony Braglia (http://ufocon.blogspot.com/2009/04/af-roswell-study-contributor-admits-it.html) Madson argued that the dummies used in his project could never be mistaken for aliens. Nevertheless, Madson says that Captain James McAndrew, the report’s author, ignored the fact that the sixfoot dummies were too large and were not used until years after the Roswell event.

It is clear to Madson, now 79, that the report was intended the provide a public cover story and nothing else. Earlier in his career Madson worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. At the time he had heard rumors of highy secure areas on the base where secret medical research was carried out. When the Roswell event unfolded, he found the notion that alien bodies had been transferred from Roswell to Wright-Patterson to be entirely plausible. Madson’s wife, who, at the time, worked at the base’s medical laboratory, agrees.

Senator Merkley on the Ed Show talking about mortgage reform

Thank you for contacting me to share your views.

Since I was sworn in as a United States Senator on January 6, 2009, I have been actively engaged in my Senate duties and pursuing a legislative agenda, while setting up an office, hiring staff, and establishing a system for communicating with my constituents. I am pleased that my office operations are now fully in place. But I regret that during these initial months, I was not able to respond directly to all of the letters, emails and faxes I have received. I have, however, reviewed daily the content of these messages. Thank you so much for sharing your views.

Here are some of the issues I have been working on during the last four and a half months.

Without question, the greatest challenge facing our country is the faltering economy. More than 13 million Americans are currently unemployed, and the number continues to grow each week. In Oregon, our unemployment rate has risen a full percentage point every month for the last four months and now exceeds 12 percent. While we cannot put America back to work overnight, we must meet this economic crisis head-on by creating jobs, investing in our infrastructure, and helping states avoid disastrous cuts and layoffs.

I worked with President Obama and my congressional colleagues to enact the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This legislation creates jobs now – more than 44,000 in Oregon alone – by investing in our nation’s transportation infrastructure, promoting the development and production of renewable energy, and modernizing our schools and repairing public buildings. This legislation puts money back in the pockets of working families by providing tax cuts for 95 percent of workers and their families, including a tax credit of $400 per person and $800 per couple for most working Americans.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, I am working closely with my colleagues to end the abusive and reckless Wall Street practices that crippled our financial system. We must also ensure vigorous congressional oversight and tough limits on inappropriate and excessive executive compensation for firms recapitalized with government assistance.

We must also take action to address the root cause of our financial crisis, the housing market. I know how hard Oregon families are hit by the mortgage crisis, and I am committed to supporting legislation that protects borrowers, reduces foreclosures, and helps to keep people in their homes. Recently, I introduced two major reforms. The Transparency for Homeowners Act would ban steering payments, which are kickbacks paid to brokers to place unsuspecting homeowners into high-cost and destructive loans. The Promoting Mortgage Responsibility Act would prohibit the use of prepayment penalties – a practice that can lock homeowners into exploitive high-interest loans. I have been asked by Senator Chris Dodd, head of the Senate Banking Committee, to chair a hearing on these predatory practices later this year.

Another huge challenge is fixing our broken health care system. I was pleased to be assigned to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), which will play a key role in drafting health care reform legislation. One of my first votes was to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The expansion of SCHIP, which was signed into law by President Obama on January 30, 2009, will provide health care coverage to about 42,000 additional children in Oregon. But with over 47 million Americans currently without health insurance and the continuing rising costs of health insurance straining families’ budgets and businesses’ bottom line, more needs to be done. I will work tenaciously with my colleagues on the HELP Committee to secure affordable and accessible health care for every single American.

As you may know, protecting our environment ranks high among my legislative priorities. I am proud to have cast my first vote in the Senate in support for the passage of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. This legislation, which was recently signed into law, designated approximately two million acres across the country as Wilderness, including nearly 200,000 acres in Oregon. Protecting these special places not only conserves wildlife habitat; it also protects sources of clean water for many Oregonians and creates jobs in the tourism and recreation industries.

In addition, I am working hard to promote the development of clean and renewable energy. Indeed, converting our economy to run on clean energy is one of the most pressing challenges our nation faces. As a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, I am helping to help draft comprehensive energy legislation to strengthen national security, create jobs, and take on global warming. It is essential to our national security that we end our dependence on foreign oil, to our economic future that the next generation of clean energy jobs be created here at home, and to our environment that we limit the pollution that is causing global warming. We are already seeing the effects of global warming in Oregon, where scientists have measured shrinking snowpack in the Cascades, which threatens reduced river flows for farm irrigation, salmon migration, and hydropower generation.

Finally, I am fighting aggressively for much-needed credit card reform. Many Oregonians are getting slapped with unfair credit card penalties and fees – at any moment their interest rates go sky high for no reason at all. I cosponsored legislation, the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act, which will tighten the rules to end such deceptive and unfair practices in the credit card industry. I am pleased we passed this landmark consumer protection bill out of committee, and I look forward to getting it to the President’s desk soon.

Generation Green: Reviving the Electric Car

Het werk van Greenpeace in 2008 had succes. Dankzij jarenlang aandacht vragen voor de crisis van onze zeeën en de opzienbarende actie met grote stukken natuursteen in de Noordzee is het onderwerp zeereservaten hoog op de politieke agenda gekomen. Na dertien jaar vertraging wees minister Verburg afgelopen december de eerste gebieden op zee aan die beschermd moeten worden. Ook liet Greenpeace in 2008 zien dat giftig elektronica afval uit Nederland gedumpt wordt in Ghana, Afrika. Elektronicaproducenten besloten onder druk van de Greenpeace-campagne giftige stoffen uit te bannen en hun inzamelingsbeleid te verbeteren. Unilever onderschrijft na een campagne van Greenpeace de noodzaak van een moratorium op de kap van oerbos voor palmolieplantages. En door verschillende diepgravende rapporten, vreedzame acties, juridische procedures en digitale protesten werd de bouw van twee klimaatvervuilende kolencentrales vertraagd.

Deze campagnes werden mogelijk dankzij de gulle steun van 550.000 donateurs van Greenpeace Nederland. Samen gaven ze in 2008 nog meer dan in 2007. De inkomsten uit fondsenwerving stegen in 2008 tot 19,7 miljoen euro. De kosten voor onze fondsenwerving bleven met 16,5 procent ruim onder de CBF-norm (25 procent). Ondanks de economische recessie in het laatste kwartaal kwamen de totale inkomsten in 2008 uit op 23,8 miljoen euro. Dat is bijna 5 procent meer dan in 2007. De openheid in het jaarverslag door Greenpeace werd vorig jaar beloond met een hoge notering in de Transparant Prijs voor charitatieve instellingen.

“Heel veel Nederlanders maken zich zorgen over het milieu, vooral over klimaatverandering. Het is inspirerend om te zien hoeveel mensen schone en duurzame energie willen. Ze begrijpen niet waarom onze regering dat niet sneller regelt. Samen met Greenpeace komen ze in actie vóór schone en tégen vuile energie zoals kolencentrales. Dat merkte ik vorig jaar bij de campagne-activiteiten in Rotterdam en Eindhoven”, stelt directeur Liesbeth van Tongeren. “Dit jaar zetten we in op een goede uitkomst van de klimaatconferentie in Kopenhagen. Nederland moet haar goede positie vasthouden en ook echt uitvoeren. Dat betekent ook geld beschikbaar stellen om wereldwijd onze bossen te behouden.”

Nieuw waren vorig jaar de FishMates, hippe regenlaarzen die het verhaal van de oceanen vertellen. Kunstenaars doneerden de speciale designs voor deze stevige laarzen, die exotische, maar veelbetekenende namen kregen als Dark Deep (de mysterieuze diepzee) en Apo Apo, een zeereservaat bij de Filippijnen. Uiteraard zijn de laarzen verantwoord geproduceerd en bevatten ze geen giftige stoffen. De FishMates deden het goed op de zomerfestivals, waar het publiek meteen een oproep aan supermarkten kon invullen om foute vis uit hun schappen te verwijderen.

De internationale campagne voor Tibet vindt de weigering van premier Balkenende om de dalai lama officieel te ontvangen ‘van weinig respect getuigen’.

De dalai lama brengt begin volgende maand een bezoek aan Nederland, en zal daarbij onder meer een lezing geven voor toplieden uit bedrijfsleven en overheid. De Nederlandse afdeling van de Tibet-campagne wijst erop dat in 1999 toenmalig premier Wim Kok de geestelijk leider van de Tibetanen wel ontving.

Bestuursleden van de stichting hebben op het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken te horen gekregen dat minister Verhagen de dalai lama wel wil ontmoeten, op een besloten bijeenkomst met andere geestelijk leiders.

Naar verluidt heeft China druk uitgeoefend op Nederland om af te zien van een ontmoeting met premier Balkenende. De Tweede Kamer heeft wel op een officiële ontvangst aangedrongen. Dinsdag wordt de premier in het parlement gevraagd waarom hij de Tibetaanse geestelijk leider niet wil ontvangen.

Stomverbaasd
Op het moment dat China druk uitoefent, moet de regering juist wel de Dalai Lama ontmoeten. Laat zien dat je de mensenrechten hoog in het vaandel hebt. Sta niet toe dat de Tibetanen onderdrukt worden door China. Maak een vuist en verwelkom deze man hartelijk.

Staatssecretaris Jan Kees de Jager van Financiën verlaagt de bijtelling van elektrische auto’s naar 10 procent. Ook de vrijstelling van BPM voor deze auto’s wordt verlengd tot 2018.

De Jager zei dat zaterdag tijdens een CDA-verkiezingsbijeenkomst op het circuit van de TT van Assen. De Jager wil de fabrikanten en leveranciers van elektrische auto’s met deze maatregelen een extra stimulans geven.

Door de lage bijtelling nu al in de wet op te nemen, hoopt De Jager de sector een duwtje in de rug te geven om zo snel mogelijk schonere auto’s op de markt te brengen.

Eerder besloot het kabinet al dat automobilisten met een elektrische auto geen wegenbelasting hoeven te betalen.

Minister van Justitie Ernst Hirsch Ballin neemt deze week deel aan de Bilderbergconferentie. Dat meldt het ministerie van de CDA-bewindsman. De besloten bijeenkomst van politici en toplieden uit het bedrijfsleven van over de hele wereld wordt dit jaar gehouden in de Griekse hoofdstad Athene.

Koningin Beatrix is doorgaans ook aanwezig bij de conferentie, maar de Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst beschouwt dat als een privéaangelegenheid en wil er niets over zeggen. De vader van Beatrix, prins Bernhard, was in 1954 een van de initiatiefnemers van de eerste bijeenkomst. Aanleiding was de verslechterende verhouding tussen de Verenigde Staten en Europa. Deze eerste bijeenkomst werd gehouden in Hotel De Bilderberg in Oosterbeek nabij Arnhem. Daar dankt de conferentie ook zijn naam aan.

De Bilderbergconferenties zijn altijd met veel geheimzinnigheid omgeven. Pers is niet welkom en er worden nooit mededelingen gedaan over wat wordt besproken. In voorgaande jaren werd de bijeenkomst bijgewoond door onder anderen premier Jan Peter Balkenende (CDA) en PvdA-politicus Bert Koenders, tegenwoordig minister voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking.

Duizenden meisjes heeft hij gered met zijn waarschuwingen. Daar gaat John Consemulder, ijveraar tegen de baarmoederhalskankerprik voor tienermeisjes, prat op. Gisteravond zette hij in Oentsjerk de farmaceutische industrie en de biomedische wetenschap gezamenlijk in de beklaagdenbank.

Vaccinatie, of het nu tegen baarmoederhalskanker of Mexicaanse griep is, is volgens Consemulder langzame vergiftiging. Met de entstof komen giftige en kankerverwekkende stoffen in het lichaam die jaren later nog hun funeste uitwerking kunnen hebben. Volgens de spirituele klankgenezer is er een complot tussen geneesmiddelenfabrikanten en medici om de gewone burger op diens eigen kosten ziek te maken. Ze zaaien angst voor een aandoening en komen dan met een middel daartegen op de proppen.

Wetenschappelijke informatie is allemaal door de fabrikanten gefinancierd, beweert Consemulder. Niet alleen de Nederlandse Gezondheidsraad, het RIVM en minister Ab Klink staan onder invloed van de fabrikanten, maar ook de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie. Het aanwakkeren van angst voor Mexicaanse griep heeft commerciële bedoelingen, is de boodschap.

Er is, zegt Consemulder, een ‘horrorlijst’ van schadelijke bijwerkingen door vaccinaties. Tegenover “de grote leugen van de biomedische wetenschap” stelt hij het zelfhelend vermogen van de mens en de heilzame werking van goede intenties en zuivere gedachten. “We kunnen de wereld helen zonder vaccins.” Daar helpen naar zijn mening ook klanken bij. Hij produceert cd’s met helende muziek. Tegenover zijn “zuivere, pure en liefdevolle intentie” stelt Consemulder de boze bedoelingen van het farmaceutische wereldcomplot.

Fabrikanten zouden opzettelijk griepvirussen verspreiden en meewerken aan een ontvolkingsstrategie van invloedrijke Amerikanen. Intussen bespeurt hij in Nederland een heksenjacht tegen alternatieve genezers.

Ik ben zelf niet zo’n complot denker, maar soms twijfel ik wel eens. De kredietcrisis heeft aangetoond dat er heel wat mensen zijn die alles doen voor geld. Zolang er geld is, komt dit al voor en dat zal ook altijd wel zo blijven, helaas. Het zou wel heel erg naïef zijn om te denken dat alle farmaceutische bedrijven het goed voor hebben met de gewone burger, het zijn namelijk grote bedrijven die miljarden dollars verdienen aan de verkoop van medicijnen en vaccins. Het farmaceutische bedrijf dat als eerste een werkend vaccin maakt tegen bv de Mexicaanse griep, verdient hier gigantisch veel geld mee. Met deze wetenschap, wat let het bedrijf dan om het griepvirus eerst te creëren?
