CPT- Hebron – West Bank – Occupied territories – On 16 June 2010, a Palestinian farmer witnessed two settlers, believed to reside in the settlement of Kiryat Arba, walking through his garden.  Upon inspection, the farmer realized that his crops, planted with the assistance of USAID, had been destroyed and water pipes slashed. According to the farmer, the damage to the crops totaled an estimated 10,000 NIS (about 2600 USD) The damaged crops are the primary food and economic resource for the extended family of thirty adults and thirty children.

The Israeli Army and Israeli Police arrived a half-hour after the farmer call them to take statements. The family filed an official complaint, but remain skeptical because they have filed complaints in the past and have never received justice.

The family lives between the settlement of Kiryat Arba and a set of prefabricated housing, installed about five years ago, called Havat Gal. The father of one of the children in the family said that he is often afraid to go to work because settlers in the area have threatened to kidnap his children. On occasion, he will stay home and miss a day of work for fear of something happening to his family. He recalled an incident involving the poisoning of his sheep, resulting in severe sickness of his children after they ingested the milk from the sheep.  He showed CPTers official doctors notes confirming the poisoning.

Nu weegt Orka Morgan 432 kilo. Maar dat is voor een orka van tussen de één en drie jaar oud, veel te weinig. Daarom moet Morgan minimaal 180 kilo aankomen. Dat zeggen de verzorgers van de zieke Orka die sinds een week wordt verzorgd in het Dolfinarium in Harderwijk.

Orka Morgan werd vorige week erg verzwakt aangetroffen in de Waddenzee. Dierenverzorgers van het Dolfinarium Harderwijk vingen haar op. Daar zwemt Morgan nu in een afgesloten bad om op krachten te komen en beter te worden.

Tienduizenden bijen maken samen een sculptuur uit bijenwas, die Jezus Christus uitbeeldt.

De regering Obama bracht op maandag een ruimteprogramma naar buiten wat afstand doet van de eenzijdige blik van de regering Bush en vooral internationale samenwerking benadrukt, inclusief een mogelijk verdrag wat de ontwikkeling van ruimtewapens terugdringt.

De afgelopen jaren hebben zowel China als de Verenigde Staten satellieten vernietigd die zich in een baan om de Aarde bevonden, zodat de wapenwedloop in de ruimte die door sommigen was aangekondigd van de baan is.

Het nieuwe ruimteprogramma stelt expliciet dat Washington voorstellen en concepten om het aantal wapens terug te dringen zal overwegen, als ze billijk en effectief blijken en bovenal de veiligheid ten goede komen.

De regering Bush benadrukte in haar ruimteprogramma in augustus 2006 letterlijk dat het “elke beperking van het fundamentele recht van de Verenigde Staten om te opereren in de ruimte en data te verzamelen zou afwijzen,” een zin die werd geïnterpreteerd als een groen licht om wapens tegen satellieten te ontwikkelen.

Het beleid omvatte ook een deel waarin stond dat Washington “de ontwikkeling van nieuwe wettelijke regimes of andere beperkingen zou tegengaan die erop gericht zijn om de toegang van de Verenigde Staten tot de ruimte te beperken of te voorkomen,” wat niets te maken heeft met het terugdringen van wapens in de ruimte.

Hier tegenover staat het beleid van president Obama, wat de noodzaak voor internationale samenwerking onderstreept. “Het is in het belang van alle landen om verantwoordelijk te handelen in de ruimte om ongevallen en wantrouwen te voorkomen,” stelt het beleid in de openingszinnen. “Ruimtemissies moeten zo worden opgezet dat ze openheid en transparantie benadrukken.”

Vele jaren lang hebben diplomaten van over de hele wereld in Genève gehamerd op een verdrag tegen wapens in de ruimte. Met positieve geluiden uit grootmachten China, Rusland en de Verenigde Staten is zo’n verdrag weer een stap dichterbij.

Het Witte Huis zal in de komende weken meer details bekend gaan maken.

Interpol has placed the head of anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson, on its international wanted list. The request to place him on the list was issued by Japan.

Interpol has issued a so-called blue notice, asking national police forces to pass on information about Mr Watson’s whereabouts and activities. But it has not issued a notice requesting his arrest. The Sea Shepherd leader has harassed the Japanese whaling fleet for the past few years, limiting the number of whales caught for so-called scientific research.

Mr Watson, who is in the United States, says the notice does not make any sense. “It’s a blue notice which means it’s not an arrest warrant, it’s just so they can keep tabs on me. But they needn’t have wasted their time, they could have just followed our website,” he said.

“One thing that it does mean to me is that we’re certainly getting to them. We cut their kill quotas in half and they’re really desperate that we not go back down there this year. “But I can tell them we’ll certainly be back down in the Southern Ocean harassing them again in December.” Despite international condemnation, Japan hunts whales under a loophole in a global moratorium.

Fewer than 5 per cent of Japanese admit to even eating whale meat. New Zealand anti-whaling activist Peter Bethune appeared in a Tokyo court last month on five charges related to his boarding of a Japanese whaling ship in the Antarctic earlier this year. Bethune has been charged with trespass, vandalism, obstructing commercial activity, being armed with a weapon and, most seriously, assault causing injury.

The assault charge stems from allegations Bethune threw tubs of rancid butter onto one of the whaling ships and in the process slightly injured a Japanese crewman. He pleaded guilty to four of the charges but denied the assault. If convicted he faces up to 15 years in jail.

The charges arose after Bethune tried to make a citizen’s arrest on the whaling ship’s captain and was also trying to serve him with a multi-million-dollar damage bill. Meanwhile, Greenland’s indigenous peoples have won the right to hunt 27 humpback whales, capping three years of acrimonious debate within the 88-nation International Whaling Commission (IWC).

The self-ruled Danish territory can now kill and consume nine of the giant marine mammals each year through 2012, with its existing quota of more than 200 minke and fin whales cut by the same number.

The decision – greeted with applause – came on the closing day of the IWC’s annual meeting in Agadir, Morocco, where a big-tent compromise deal between pro- and anti-whaling nations collapsed earlier in the week.
