Afgelopen maandag werd een man na 27 dagen levend onder het puin van een ingestort winkelpand in Port-au-Prince gehaald. Hij lag daar bedolven sinds de zware aardbeving op Haïti van 12 januari dit jaar.

De 28-jarige Evan Muncie leed enigszins aan uitgedroging en ondervoeding, maar maakte het, ondanks wat verwondingen aan zijn voeten, naar omstandigheden redelijk goed. Artsen staan voor een raadsel hoe Muncie zo lang heeft kunnen overleven zonder voedsel en water. Ze denken dat hij wellicht water in de buurt moet hebben gehad, maar niets wijst daarop.

In de Engelse krant lezen we dat Evan Muncie zelf zegt dat “een man met een witte jas” hem regelmatig water kwam brengen, toen hij daar bedolven lag. Artsen vermoeden dat Evan wellicht aan hallucinaties leed, maar hebben anderzijds geen verklaring voor wat hem dan zo lang in leven heeft gehouden.

Wie is deze man geweest die hem hielp met overleven? Een arts of reddingswerker lijkt onlogisch, immers zouden deze direct hulp bieden en hem uit het puin hebben gehaald als zij hadden geweten dat Evan daar lag.

Zou deze mysterieuze figuur dan misschien zijn beschermengel geweest kunnen zijn? We hopen dat zodra Evan helemaal is opgeknapt, hij zijn volledige verhaal zal vertellen.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake. Its epicentre was near Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The earthquake occurred at 16:53:10 local time (21:53:10 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010,[4][5] at a depth of 13 km (8.1 miles). The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of at least 33 aftershocks, fourteen of them between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9.

Despite criticism for the US military presence in quake-stricken Haiti, Washington says it has a long-term plan to stay in the country.

“We are there for the long term, this is not something that will be resolved quickly and easily,” US Ambassador to the UN Alejandro Wolff said on Thursday. Just three days after a magnitude 7 earthquake jolted Haiti on January 12, the United States began to send military forces to the impoverished Caribbean nation. The head of US Southern Command General Douglas Fraser said on Thursday that nearly 20,000 US troops are due to operate, both on land and offshore, by Sunday.

Currently over 2,676 US troops are operating on the ground in Haiti, Fraser said, adding the number is going to swell to 4,600 by the weekend and that another 10,445 are currently afloat aboard vessels offshore. More than 4,000 other soldiers and Marines also left North Carolina late Wednesday. This is while leading international aid organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres, blasted the US for putting the delivery of soldiers before medical supplies.

The presence of the US military, which has taken over command of the distribution of humanitarian aid, has raised the ire of some other countries including France, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Paris demanded the United Nations investigate and clarify the dominant US role in Haiti.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said Haiti seeks “humanitarian aid, not troops.”  Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez accused the US of seeking to occupy the country. “The United States government is using a humanitarian tragedy to militarily occupy Haiti. I read somewhere that they even occupied the [presidential] palace.”

Washington, in the past, has been accused of interfering in Haitian internal affairs on many occasions. The US military played a role in the departure of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide before his second term was over in early 2004. Aristide described his departure as kidnapping.

Haiti was occupied by US Marines for nearly 20 years from 1915 to 1934. Former US President Bill Clinton sent troops to Haiti in 1994.

Haiti Army Occupation

De Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties hebben giro 555 geopend om geld in te zamelen voor de slachtoffers van de zware aardbeving in Haïti. Plannen voor een tv-actie op de publieke omroep zijn er nog niet. Dit meldt de NOS woensdag.

Vanaf vliegveld Eindhoven vertrekt deze avond nog een Urban Search and Rescue Team. De zestig mensen en speurhonden gaan helpen bij het opsporen van de duizenden mensen die nog onder het puin bedolven liggen. Defensie heeft een transportvliegtuig beschikbaar gesteld.

De Verenigde Naties maken 10 miljoen euro vrij. Ook president Obama heeft noodhulp toegezegd. Nederland schenkt 2 miljoen euro aan noodhulp.

De president van Haïti, René Préval, vreest dat er mogelijk duizenden doden zijn gevallen door de zware aardbeving in de Caribische republiek. Dat heeft het staatshoofd woensdag tegen de Amerikaanse krant Miami Herald gezegd.

“Onvoorstelbaar” noemde Préval de toestand in de hoofdstad Port-au-Prince . ,,Het parlement, het belastingkantoor, scholen en ziekenhuizen zijn ingestort.” Volgens de president liggen er “veel doden in scholen”. Préval stapte over lijken heen en hoorde mensen schreeuwen vanonder het ingestorte parlement. Onder meer de voorzitter van de Senaat, Kely Bastien, zit gevangen in het parlementsgebouw, maar leeft nog. Ook zei Préval: “Alle ziekenhuizen zitten bomvol. Het is een ramp.”

Het was de eerste reactie van het staatshoofd sinds de beving van dinsdag met een kracht van 7,0 op de schaal van Richter, die ook werd gevoeld in Cuba en de Dominicaanse Republiek. De president zei dat hij niet had geslapen sinds de beving en dat veel mensen op straat sliepen omdat ze bang waren dat hun woning zou instorten.

Volgens mediaberichten proberen overlevenden slachtoffers onder het puin vandaan te halen en stapelen ze lichamen op langs de kant van de weg in de hoofdstad.

De Verenigde Naties hebben de dood van vijf van hun medewerkers bevestigd. Ruim honderd VN-medewerkers worden nog vermist.
